Thinking about and planning for the end of your senior’s life is not easy to do at all. In fact, she may be resisting the topic completely.
Talk about These Issues as Soon as Possible
It’s possible that your senior isn’t quite at the end stage of her life just yet, which makes now a perfect time to open up this conversation. But even if your elderly family member is near the end of her life, it’s still the right time. The sooner this conversation happens the better, but it’s always important to open the dialogue, no matter when.
Take the Conversation Slowly
You don’t have to solve everything in one conversation. In fact, it can be helpful if you take your time with each issue your senior is facing. Taking your time gives you an opportunity to look for all sorts of solutions, such as hiring end-of-life care providers. These aren’t easy talks to have, so remember that your elderly family member may need to take a break in order to gather her thoughts again.
Remind Your Senior This Is about Her
If your senior is not willing to have this talk, it’s important to remind her that this is about addressing her needs and wants. It’s easy to forget that when you’re talking about painful topics. Let your aging family member know that you want to do what she wants later in her life, but that means you have to know what she wants.
Share Plans with Family Members Who Need to Know
Some of the plans that you and your senior are making may not be ones that you need to involve other family members in at all. But there may be some family members who do need to be aware of what’s going on. Make sure that you’re clear on who needs to know what so that you can funnel that information appropriately.
Set the Plans in Motion, if Necessary
Depending on where your senior is in her journey, some of these plans may need to go into motion now. Hiring end-of-life care providers now gives them a chance to get to know your senior now, for instance. You’ll also have a better chance of taking respite time knowing that your senior is being taken care of while you’re away.
If you’re still having trouble convincing your senior that it’s time to get started on these plans, it might be time to talk to other family members. They may be able to help her to understand that this is vital and will only help her in the long run.
